A fresh spin on visual tricks and freestyle skills

Matt Jones

Our work with Red Bull always pushes to raise the bar. That was the case in 2017/18 when an opportunity came to show a unique perspective of downhill mountain bike riding.

Photo sequence effects are commonplace in photography, but only a few music videos have successfully used them in film. But a high-octane sports edit? That had never been done before.

However, mastering new techniques is our edit team’s bread and butter, so bringing the photo sequence effect to life was a walk in the woods for us.

VFX

Like any concept, getting successful tests would prove whether this could work.

Thankfully, the tests—featuring Kriss Kyle as a stand-in for injured Matt Jones—proved a success, and we had the green light to proceed.

Putting the effort into pre-production paid off in the build-up to shooting. Multiple scouting trips to the location suggested what could be possible with flying a drone through dense trees, while we could plan clothing and bike colours to match the post-requirements.

Ten days of shooting later, we had our footage. But would it work?

Making The Cut

Our team's hours of planning and skilful editing really paid off, and we soon delivered a hero film built for Red Bull’s YouTube audience alongside multiple social assets.

With almost 2 million YouTube views to date, Frames Of Mind pushed the technical and creative boundaries to new limits, taking a unique concept to showcase the versatile talent of one of the best riders around.
