Jumping over a MASSIVE ship

Bringing together the biggest names in kitesurfing and some even bigger boats

Made for YouTube

How do you take an event as crazy as Red Bull King Of The Air and bring that big air energy to the small screen?

Ahead of the 2022 edition of the world’s greatest big air kitesurfing competition, Red Bull challenged us to create a YouTube film to bring hype for this iconic event. We’d have to:

  • Showcase the world’s best kitesurfers in a way never seen before

  • Safely deploy athletes alongside boats in one of the world’s busiest shipping areas

  • Navigate notoriously unpredictable weather conditions

  • And build it all to entertain Red Bull’s YouTube audience

No pressure, then.

Jumping a Really Big Ship

No matter how much planning you put in, you can’t control the weather.

Add that to coordinating busy athlete diaries with the tight schedules of an international shipping port, and you’ve got yourself a nigh-impossible task to pull off this logistical challenge.

After a long, anxious wait, the weather eventually turned in our favour, and we took our chance. Lining up against a 94-meter-long tug boat, our three kitesurfers sent it over the bow—much to the amazement of the crew on board.

Not content with that, the trio made waves out to a 400m long cargo ship, heading well out to sea and capturing the fun and freedom of this incredibly physical sport.

The result

Not to toot our own foghorn, but making the impossible possible is kinda our niche.

So many variables had to slot into place for us to even be in a position to shoot, let alone allow the athletes to do their thing over that massive boat.

In the end, we delivered a 7-minute YouTube video, perfectly timed to launch KOTA 2022 in Cape Town. The video captured not only the finest kite surfing athletes but also the sheer infectious joy of their sport.

With over 1 million YouTube views, this video was the most popular content from Red Bull King Of The Air in 2022.
