Behind the scenes with motorsport superstars in an action-packed YouTube series

A global series

Whether it’s two wheels or four, telling motorsports stories is always a challenge we relish. For Monster Energy’s All Access series, we followed Ken Block, Maxime Renaux and Pecco Bagnaia, three of the biggest names across three disciplines, as they prepared for their next crucial race.

Shot and edited specifically for YouTube, this multi-episode series balanced fast-paced action with precision planning. The key challenges were:

  • Gaining access to take audiences behind the scenes with their favourite athletes

  • Negotiating working with athletes during crucial race seasons

  • Capturing content across MotoGP, motocross and rally

  • Engaging Monster’s global motorsports audience

Racing across the world

It’s never easy gaining access to athletes. Their rigorous training regimes are tight enough out of season but even trickier when they’re in the midst of the run-up to a crucial race.

With Pecco Bagnaia, his slow start to the year meant he had a mountain to climb to have any chance of winning. In the case of Maxime Renaux, we’d be shooting with the Frenchman on his home turf, with lots to prove to his fans and competitors. And carving out time with one of the sport’s most famous athletes, Ken Block, would always be tricky.

All three shoots brought their own challenges, but they also allowed us to work with some incredible characters in motorsport and catch a glimpse of the human face under the helmet, giving viewers a new view of their favourite sport.

The final outcome

Spanning a three-part YouTube series, each episode engaged audiences, bringing a combined 3.8 million views and counting.

We successfully took audiences into the heart of the action, from witnessing the crushing disappointment of Renaux crashing out to the now poignant moments shared between Ken Block and his family. All Access delivered more than just action—the series highlighted the human element of the athletes that are not often showcased, creating a new connection for the audience.

It’s this emotion that makes sport so special to those of us who love it and makes creating projects like this all the more rewarding. It's all the more reason to keep telling the stories of those who live and breathe sport every day.
