The Ocean Race

Delving into racing tactics as The Ocean Race sails into a new era

The ultimate adventure

Often described as the toughest sporting event in the world, The Ocean Race is a feat of endurance, strategy, and sheer determination. With sailing full of technical jargon and some pretty major changes for the 2023 season, Eurosport wanted to educate audiences with a series of explainer videos.

A short, sharp project in comparison to the gruelling Ocean Race itself, we had waves of our own to conquer:

  • Translate a complicated sport into understandable and relatable content

  • Engage Discovery’s broad sports audience, not just the core sailing community

  • Seamlessly integrate remote interviews

  • Deliver the whole project in under six weeks

The relentless race

Drawing on our in-house team’s sailing knowledge, we quickly identified and conducted the remote interviews that would form the backbone of our explainer content.

We matched that with carefully selected archive footage to create a series of engaging graphics that helped visualise many of the technicalities. This made the technical information relatable for a non-sailing audience while still engaging core sailing fans.

With the Ocean Race’s opening stage just around the corner, the assets were delivered on schedule to welcome broadcast and digital audiences to the new 2023 race format.

Teamwork

Both explainer videos, broadcast live in over 50 countries on Eurosport and Discovery+, were quickly put into service to explain The Ocean Race’s changes for the upcoming 2022-2023 race.

Our in-house team’s strategic planning and creative editing work, coupled with the content highlighting the teamwork of the fearless sailors during the race, made for two well-received pieces of content that informed and entertained.
